Description is advocacy for resources.

In cultural heritage institutions, resources are materials for the community’s use. In libraries we usually think of books and other documents as resources, while museums have a wider range of objects.

Describing these resources allows us to make use of them. Yet description also allows us to advocate for the allocation of resources to these resources. While not always explicit, catalog records guide the distribution of space, labor, budget, attention, privacy, companionship, preservation and many other resources within a collection.

In resources resources, a project for the 2023 4S conference, I invited participants to describe a variety of items with attention to their needs as well as their affordances.
